Deep Listening

I host workshops on Deep Listening—a gentle yet radical practice of paying attention; founded by American composer and musician Pauline Oliveros.

Listening is deeply connected to silence. Our world is loud and full of stimuli constantly pulling at us. But how do we deal with silence, or absence?

Becoming still creates space: space in the mind, space for others, space to feel more deeply. This can feel uncomfortable or confronting, yet practicing stillness can strengthen our connection to ourselves and to the world around us. In this sense, slowing down can spark inner and energetic movement.

By learning to appreciate subtle, slow transformations, we nurture a more sustainable sense of well-being and compassion. Revaluing slowness and listening to everyday sounds, opens a way of listening with rather than listening to. The self and the other are not separate.

During the workshops, we explore this together through subtle movement, listening and imagination exercises, as well as by sharing experiences.

Handouts for workshop serie 'Movement in Repose'

Any Piece of Music (in honor of Pauline Oliveros)

A piece that moves like water, fire, air and earth
In all variaties of appearance
A piece that would contain all the human voices on the earth
A piece that would contain all the voices of cicades
A piece that would contain all the voices of whales
A duet between a children’s voice and the earth itself
A duet between the voice of life and death
A song in two parts with sounds of earth from outer space
and sounds of outer space from earth.
A piece with the sound received from alien life
A never ending piece
A piece with the fastness of light
A piece with the slowness of the creation of stone
A piece growing like rhizomes
A piece with sounds from underground
A silent song
A piece with the sound of collected breaths
A radio station on the other side of the world
A radio station on the other side of the world untuned
A lullaby from your childhood
The very first song ever played
The last song before the end of the world
A piece with unhearable frequencies
A song you heard in your dreams
A piece screamed out loud
A piece whispered in tongues
A song in a language you would love to learn
A piece with the sounds of home
A piece with the sounds of your dreamed home
The sound of doors opening
The sound of squeaky wooden floors
The sound of wind howling
Listening with an open window
The sound of a radio untuned
The sound of children whispering
The dim sound of neighbors
The sound of people cooking and laughing
The sound of my mom shouting ‘the food is ready!’
A piece with the sound of a crackling fire
A campfire singalong
The sound of rain on a tent
The quietness of early mornings
The noisy rush of a Saturday evening
A piece with stroopwafels & tea in the morning
A piece that smells like oranges
A piece with the sound of children playing and laughing
A piece that quiets an uneasy heart
A piece with the sounds of a dreamed home
A sound for space
A song without space
A piece that amplifies the silence
A piece with the attempt of understanding despite disagreeing
A piece with all the footsteps of the past
A piece out of echoes from echoes from echoes
...
